Can I use it on 220v circuits?
The standard Circuit Sniffer™ is designed for 90 to 120 VAC outlets — perfect for most U.S. homes.
It will not work on 220V circuits or higher-voltage systems.

Does is work on AC circuits?
Yes — the Circuit Sniffer™ works perfectly with AC circuits between 90 and 120 VAC.

What is a GFCI tester and how does it work?
What does a GFCI tester do?
A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) tester helps protect you from potential electrical shock by checking that an outlet’s wiring is safe and correctly installed. It tests the circuit to see if there are any wiring faults or safety risks before you plug in appliances or tools.
How does it work?
Simply plug the transmitter into the outlet you want to test and press the GFCI test button. The built-in indicator lights will show whether the wiring is correct — or identify what type of issue is present.

When should I adjust the sensitivity, and how?
The Circuit Sniffer™ includes a Manual Sensitivity Mode, which lets you fine-tune the signal to get the most accurate reading for every breaker box.
You’ll want to adjust the sensitivity if more than one breaker seems to respond, or if the signal feels too strong or too weak.
Here’s how:
1. Press the Manual Mode button to switch to Frequency 1 and scan the breakers.
2. If multiple breakers beep, press the button again to switch to Frequency 2 and rescan the box.
3. If multiple breakers beep, press the button again to switch to Frequency 3 and scan the box one more time.
Automatic Mode should work in most situations. However, sometimes the circuits may have interference from other devices. Using Manual Mode to switch between the three frequencies helps you find the one that’s free from interference, giving you a clear, accurate reading.
Will it work if my outlet is no longer working properly?
No — the Circuit Sniffer™ relies on the outlet’s power to operate, so the outlet or circuit you’re testing must be live and supplying power.
If you need to trace or identify circuits that no longer have power, check out our Dead-Circuit Tracer. It works just like the Circuit Sniffer™, but is designed specifically for powered-off or faulty circuits.
Will the device work if the circuit I'm trying to trace has no power?
No — the Circuit Sniffer™ requires the circuit or outlet to be live in order to operate. It uses the outlet’s power to energize its circuitry, so the circuit must be supplying power for the tool to work properly.
If you need to trace or identify circuits that no longer have power, take a look at our Dead-Circuit Tracer — it works the same way but is designed for powered-off or faulty circuits.
Can it turn on accidentally in my toolbox?
No — the power button is designed to be firm and recessed, making it very difficult to press by accident.
This helps prevent it from turning on inside your tool bag or toolbox during transport or storage.
